Microneedling with the Rejuvapen

Fractional Collagen Induction Therapy- also called Microneedling

The Rejuvapen is a remarkable, non-laser, non-surgical treatment that causes skin to stimulate collagen production and fresh, new tissue.  Fine lines, scarring, stretch marks, acne and hyperpigmentation significantly diminish; pores become finer; and the overall health and circulation of the skin is improved.

Rejuvapen utilizes 9 precisely spaced micro needles in a small cartridge to create invisible, vertical, micro perforations into the top layers of the skin. As a result the skin shifts its natural repair mechanism into high gear and starts producing collagen and elastin. The self-repairing property of the skin is a 100% natural form of skin renewal.   Adjustable needle length allows customized treatments from skin freshening to deep scar repair anywhere on the body.

Typically the healing time depends on the severity of the damaged skin and the depth of the procedure. Most commonly there may be some redness that resembles mild sunburn. This may last for 2-4 days. Some patients may have the redness dissipate within 24 hours.  The skin will be pink or red in appearance for 24-48 hours, much like a sunburn with some minor bleeding and very occasionally some mild bruising. The skin may also feel warm, tight and itchy for a short while. Generally the inflammatory reaction of the skin is short and fades significantly after a couple of days. Patients with a more sensitive skin type or older patients may take longer to fully recover.

Aftercare Treatment

Use tepid water to cleanse the face for the first 48 hours following treatment and drying the area gently without rubbing. Always use clean hands to avoid infection. Avoid applying makeup products for the first 12 hours following treatment. Your esthetician or nurse will advise you on use of appropriate, gentle skincare following the treatment.

Patients may notice healthier looking skin right away. However, keep in mind that dermal collagen remodeling occurs over time and it would not be realistic to expect damage that has happened to the skin over a long period of time to disappear right away.

We suggest a series of 4-6 sessions depending on what the treatment is for. It can take between 6-8 weeks before visible signs of skin regeneration are seen and the process will continue to evolve over the next 3-6 months providing a gradual improvement.

Contraindications for treatment

  • Use of tanning beds or unprotected sun exposure for 1 week
  • Eczema and psoriasis in the area
  • Deep facial peel within 2 weeks
  • Retinoids for 1 week
  • NSAIDS and anti-inflammatory medications for 1 week prior and 3 days after
  • Skin infections, fever blisters, open wounds, open and active breakouts need to be resolved for 1 week prior.
  • If you have a history of cold sores, pretreatment is recommended
  • Wait 2 weeks after toxins and fillers
  • Rosacea
  • Use of Accutane for 6 months

Hyaluronic acid (HA) is described as “nature’s moisturizer” because its main function in the body is to bind with water. 50% of the body’s HA is found in the skin tissue, so it is a vital ingredient in keeping skin healthy!  Young skin is smooth and highly elastic because it contains a high concentration of both collagen and HA.  The HA acts as a space filler by binding to water and helps keep the collagen moist and elastic.  Unfortunately, as we get older, the body isn’t able to maintain this same level of concentration, which results in the skin becoming drier and prone to wrinkles.

Peptides are an entirely different beast. They are short chains of amino acids that are formed when collagen and skin tissue break down.  The peptides essentially signal to cells that skin has been damaged and that it needs to produce more collagen to heal it.

GROWTH FACTORS SERUM (recovery serum)

Fibroblast growth factors are naturally derived cells found in the connective tissue in the  body’s organs that produce proteins such as collagen.  They are responsible for supporting the repair of damaged skin, making components that provide firmness and elasticity to the skin while helping to maintain skin’s protective functions. They are NOT Growth Hormones.  Aging and sun-damaged skin require growth factors to maintain itself. However cells in aging skin make less growth factors than cells in youthful skin.

STEM CELLS SERUM  (active serum)

Stem cells derived from adipose fat tissue are becoming more in favor for protecting and promoting cellular renewal.  They are pluripotent, meaning that they can repair every type of cell in the body.  They trigger healthy cells to repair damaged cells and replicate new healthy cells, in turn diminishing fine lines, scarring, and any type of damage to the skin.

PRP creates, stimulates, and accelerates the body's natural healing process. Platelets are naturally extremely rich in the connective tissue growth and healing factors. The body’s first response to tissue injury is to deliver platelets to the area. Platelets initiate repair and attract stem cells to the injury. Injecting these growth factors into damaged cells stimulates the natural repair process. In order to maximize the healing process, the platelets must be concentrated and separated from the red blood cells. The goal of PRP is to maximize the number of platelets while minimizing the number of red blood cells in a solution that is injected into the area.
